There is no doubt that both employers and Admissions´ Tutors in universities can be more impressed by teenagers who have organised their own trip abroad than by those who have not shown such initiative.
However, it is also clear that some young people who undertake really exciting and adventurous periods of travel find it difficult to express what they have done, either on an application form or in an interview.
To help sixth formers plan the trip and to ensure that they make the best use of the time away, we have produced the Gap Year Journey Planner.
It has two unique benefits.
Firstly, it gives a framework into which the travelling can be organised and details of arrangements written down.
Secondly, it ensures that the planning side of the travel is recorded. This is the part that will be of great benefit when it comes to applying for university or a job, because it will mean that all the work in setting up the trip can be recalled.
There is no doubt that both Personnel Directors and Admissions´ Tutors in universities are much more impressed by a person who can talk about the way in which arrangements are made, rather than by one who simply says, “I went to Peru – it was good.”
Yet it is the detail of the early arrangements that can most easily be forgotten. The Gap Year Journey Planner ensures that they are preserved and can be used in applications and interviews in the future.
